Welcome to BK Nation, our new national organization for and by people like you. I am so very honored, humbled, and excited to be a co-founder and president of BK Nation, of being able to provide a website like this for bloggers, readers—and truth-tellers and truth-seekers like yourself. Do not get me wrong: you will not like or agree with everything on our site or everything our organization says or does, and that is a good thing. Most important to us at BK Nation is the free flow and exchange of ideas, conversations, solutions, action steps. But what we hope we have in common with you is a strong desire to make America and this planet better for all people, not just the privileged few.
In the words of the rapper Drake “We started from the bottom now we here….” as in BK Nation began as an idea in my head in the late 1990s, with a different name altogether. It was called “Get Up On It” and was actually a section of Vibe magazine I created, where I had been a staff writer for several years. The point of that section was to provide a space for political and social issues even as writers such as me were interviewing stars of the day like Tupac Shakur. After a promising start and great interest I moved away from “Get Up On It” until I ran for Congress here in New York City in 2008, and again in 2010. I did not win but I came away from those campaigns determined to help build and create an organization, a social movement, that would be progressive, multicultural, and, again, about solutions and actions. So this is our organization, our website. We want you to check it out, participate, express whatever opinions you have, share links, sign up for our list serve, and become a member of BK Nation. You can do as much as you’d like with BK Nation, or just a little. We are simply asking you to get involved, to do something….
