For the past few years, the tech industry has been plagued with a number of mergers and acquisitions. Some of the biggest acquisitions have been Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp, which Facebook started out as a simple message platform. Google’s purchase of Nest led to Google’s foray into other products like Android Wear and its home security division. Then, the acquisition of Motorola by Google led to Google’s smartphone product under the company’s product lineup.
If you plan to read my blog, you probably notice that I’m a firm believer that Microsoft (which I co-founded nearly 40 years ago) is able to create positive impact through the power of technology. In fact, I believe that the problems we face today can be solved through technology, but we need to use it in the right way. Unfortunately, some in the tech industry are more interested in making money than solving problems. And this is not the only problem, since we are seeing a trend of tech giants growing larger and larger, without any thought on the negative consequences of a few huge companies dominating the industry.
Bill Gates is skeptical of breaking up tech giants. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist was one of the founders of the Open Societies Foundation, which runs the Open Technology Institute and other initiatives—and he’s joined the Break Up Big Tech coalition. He wrote a blog post on his views.
We are seeing increasing demand for unbundling in the US from the big global tech giants like Facebook, Googl, Apple and Amazon. This is due to various user privacy violations and other problems that have been uncovered by these companies. People are afraid that these companies have become too powerful and will do whatever they want and get away with it because they have enough cash reserves to do anything. Therefore, some believe that they should be regulated so that they can be held accountable when problems arise at the hands of the tech giants.
While we know that Microsoft is not involved in the various ongoing investigations, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has shared his thoughts on the matter. Bill Gates made the comments after antitrust investigations were launched against Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple over various issues. Gates has said he’s skeptical of the tech giants’ separation. According to him, there are only a limited number of issues for which breaking the relationship is the right answer. However, Bill also added that he is in favor of abolishing bad practices, but gave no details.
Bill Gates added that when a company behaves like this, you should just say you want to get rid of it: Okay, that’s prohibited conduct. Splitting the company in two and having two people do bad things doesn’t seem like a solution to me. He also said that the tax rules should be changed by the government, adding: The fact that the tax rules encourage people to structure themselves in a certain way to minimize taxes, people should look at whether they want to change that in the future.
