For the past few months or so, Microsoft employees from around the world have been meeting in secret in cities around the world to discuss climate change, and the effects it has on our world. Now that the meeting is over, and the final report has been published, we can see what Microsoft employees think about this, and how they feel about climate change. The report states in its opening statement that “Microsoft is complicit in this (climate change)… When we have a contribution to society in the form of products, the scale of that contribution depends on the scale of that society.”
Microsoft employees are calling on the company to take a stand on climate change, after the company was revealed to have been secretly helping the US government to spy on its own citizens. It’s pretty bad when your company is actively participating in an activity that you are trying to stop.
Last year, we wrote about the garbage that is the White House’s ‘Climate Action Report’. The report—which was written by the White House Council on Environmental Quality—claimed that the US would not meet its targets to cut emissions under the Paris climate agreement. If you haven’t heard about this report—or the ‘Climate Action Report’ for that matter—it’s time to pay attention.
Microsoft employees are unhappy with their company’s role in the climate crisis. Microsoft employees even say the company has no role in the climate change issue. Therefore, Microsoft employees wrote a letter saying that we can no longer ignore the fact that Microsoft is complicit in the climate crisis.
This announcement comes after the Windows manufacturer announced a partnership with Schlumberger and Chevron. We also know that at 20. A massive global climate strike will begin in September 2024. We expect thousands of people to join this strike, and Microsoft employees are certainly among them.
As to why Microsoft employees are unhappy with the company, a letter has been published that contains some revelations. You can read the letter below:
At this week’s AGM, our CEO, Satya Nadella, defended our contracts with major oil companies by saying that our technology helps them in their research efforts to develop renewable energy. But this clearly runs counter to the ambitions of fossil fuel company CEOs and even other Microsoft executives.
If we want real results, we need to mobilize everyone, work together and demand a fundamental change in Microsoft’s priorities. The technology sector is clearly one of the biggest contributors to the destruction of the planet, both through its large consumption of fossil fuels in energy-intensive data centres and its support for the big oil companies. But we must also recognize that we have many resources that we can use to move our industry and our government in the right direction.
In addition, the letter states that technology companies have the resources and technology to influence climate change. They are asking their current employer to take action in this area. Microsoft has not commented following the publication of the letter.
